A Message from the Doctor

As an Obstetrician and Gynaecologist, I believe that women's healthcare should be based on trust, understanding, and individualized medical care. Every woman has unique health needs that can change across different stages of life, from adolescence and reproductive years through pregnancy, childbirth, and beyond.

My approach is to understand each patient's concerns carefully, evaluate her medical and reproductive health comprehensively, and provide treatment options that are appropriate to her individual needs. In obstetric care, I focus on supporting women through pregnancy with appropriate monitoring, antenatal care, timely assessment, and guidance to promote maternal and fetal wellbeing.

Gynaecological care is equally important for maintaining long-term health. I provide consultations for a range of women's health concerns and believe that timely evaluation can help identify problems early and facilitate appropriate treatment.

I encourage my patients to ask questions, understand their diagnosis and treatment options, and actively participate in decisions regarding their healthcare. Clear communication is an important part of my practice, and I am able to communicate with patients in English, Tamil, and Malayalam.

My goal is to provide compassionate, evidence-based, and patient-centred obstetric and gynaecological care, while ensuring that every woman feels heard, respected, and supported throughout her healthcare journey.

Ideally, the first antenatal consultation should be scheduled as soon as pregnancy is confirmed, preferably within the first few weeks. Early assessment helps establish the pregnancy timeline, review medical and obstetric history, identify potential risk factors, and recommend appropriate blood tests, scans, supplements, and lifestyle measures. Regular antenatal visits thereafter allow monitoring of maternal health and fetal development throughout pregnancy. Timely care is particularly important for women with previous pregnancy complications, medical conditions, fertility treatment, or other factors that may increase pregnancy-related risks.

A high-risk pregnancy is one in which the mother, baby, or both may have a higher-than-usual risk of complications. Factors can include maternal age, previous pregnancy complications, multiple pregnancy, hypertension, diabetes, thyroid disorders, obesity, recurrent pregnancy loss, certain infections, or fetal growth concerns. A pregnancy may also become high-risk during its course if complications develop. High-risk pregnancy care involves closer monitoring, appropriate investigations, timely identification of complications, and individualized management to support maternal and fetal wellbeing throughout pregnancy and delivery.

A normal or vaginal delivery involves the baby being delivered through the birth canal, whereas a Caesarean section involves surgically delivering the baby through incisions made in the abdomen and uterus. Vaginal delivery is generally preferred when medically appropriate because recovery is usually faster. However, a C-section may be recommended when vaginal delivery could pose significant risks to the mother or baby, such as certain fetal positions, placenta-related complications, fetal distress, or specific maternal conditions. The mode of delivery should be determined based on individual clinical circumstances.

Postnatal care focuses on the mother's physical and emotional recovery after childbirth, as well as supporting her transition into motherhood. It may include assessment of recovery after vaginal delivery or C-section, bleeding, wound healing, uterine recovery, breastfeeding concerns, contraception, nutrition, and general wellbeing. Blood pressure, anemia, infections, and other postpartum concerns may also require evaluation. Emotional health is an important component of postnatal care, and women should feel comfortable discussing anxiety, persistent sadness, exhaustion, or other emotional changes with their healthcare provider.

Preconception counselling is beneficial when planning a pregnancy and ideally should take place before conception. It provides an opportunity to review medical, surgical, menstrual, reproductive, and obstetric history and identify factors that could influence pregnancy. Your doctor may recommend folic acid supplementation, vaccination updates, medication review, lifestyle modifications, and management of conditions such as diabetes, thyroid disorders, or hypertension. Previous pregnancy complications, recurrent miscarriages, infertility concerns, or genetic risks can also be discussed. Preparing before conception can help optimize maternal health and support a healthier pregnancy.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common hormonal and metabolic condition that may cause irregular periods, acne, excess hair growth, weight-related concerns, or difficulty conceiving. Management depends on the individual's symptoms, reproductive goals, and overall health. Treatment may involve lifestyle modification, menstrual-cycle regulation, management of metabolic risk factors, or fertility-focused treatment when pregnancy is desired. PCOS is a long-term condition, so regular medical evaluation can help address changing needs and reduce associated health risks. Treatment should always be individualized rather than based on symptoms alone.

Infertility evaluation may be considered when pregnancy has not occurred after 12 months of regular, unprotected intercourse in women under 35. For women aged 35 or older, evaluation is generally recommended after six months, while earlier assessment may be appropriate when there are irregular periods, known reproductive disorders, previous pelvic surgery, recurrent pregnancy loss, or other concerns. Evaluation typically considers both partners and may include menstrual and ovulation assessment, hormonal investigations, ultrasound, and appropriate evaluation of the male partner. Early consultation can help identify potential causes and discuss suitable treatment options.

Menstrual concerns that are persistent, severe, or different from your usual pattern should be evaluated. These may include very heavy bleeding, prolonged periods, significantly painful periods, irregular cycles, bleeding between periods, or absence of menstruation. Such symptoms can sometimes be associated with conditions including PCOS, fibroids, endometriosis, hormonal disturbances, thyroid disorders, or other gynaecological problems. A detailed history and appropriate examination or investigations can help determine the underlying cause. Seeking timely medical advice can support accurate diagnosis and appropriate management rather than relying on self-treatment.

Contraceptive options include barrier methods, oral hormonal contraceptives, long-acting reversible methods, intrauterine devices, injectable or implantable methods where appropriate, and permanent contraception. The most suitable option depends on factors such as age, medical history, reproductive plans, menstrual pattern, breastfeeding status, and personal preferences. A gynaecological consultation can help explain the effectiveness, benefits, limitations, potential side effects, and suitability of each method. Contraceptive counselling should be individualized, allowing women and couples to make informed decisions based on their current and future family-planning goals.

Women may experience hormonal changes during perimenopause several years before menopause. Symptoms can include irregular periods, hot flashes, night sweats, sleep disturbances, mood changes, vaginal dryness, and changes in sexual or urinary health. Symptoms that interfere with daily life deserve professional evaluation. A gynaecologist can assess symptoms, consider other possible causes, and discuss appropriate lifestyle measures and treatment options. Menopause care should also address longer-term health considerations, including bone health, cardiovascular risk, and overall wellbeing, based on the woman's individual medical history and risk factors.

A laparoscopic hysterectomy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure to remove the uterus through small abdominal incisions using a camera and specialized instruments. Depending on the clinical situation, the cervix, ovaries, or fallopian tubes may also need to be addressed. It may be considered for conditions such as symptomatic fibroids, abnormal uterine bleeding, endometriosis, adenomyosis, or other conditions where hysterectomy is medically appropriate. Compared with conventional open surgery, minimally invasive approaches may offer smaller incisions, reduced postoperative discomfort, and potentially faster recovery, although suitability depends on individual circumstances.

Women's healthcare often involves concerns related to menstruation, fertility, pregnancy, contraception, sexual and reproductive health, menopause, and emotional wellbeing. A non-judgemental and receptive clinical environment allows women to discuss sensitive symptoms, experiences, concerns, and emotions openly without fear of criticism. Honest communication can help doctors obtain a more complete medical history, identify important symptoms, and provide appropriate treatment. Patient-centred care also encourages women to understand their diagnosis and choices, ask questions, and participate confidently in healthcare decisions while feeling heard, respected, and supported.
